# Royco Talks Extra - A Deep Dive on Dawn with Portals

They walked through the protocol end to end: where it came from, how the mechanics actually work, and what Senior and Junior tranches unlock.

**How Royco ended up building Dawn**
====================================

Royco started as something completely different: a marketplace for liquidity incentives. It powered Boyco's $3 billion liquidity acquisition campaign on Berachain, and a few other big launches.

Then the team admitted something most protocols never say out loud. In Shiv's words: "incentives are not a long-term way of creating sticky users and sticky capital. They were vaporware."

So they took the lesson and built something new. From distributing rewards on top of yield, to working on the yield itself.

**What makes Dawn unique**
==========================

This was the most interesting part of the conversation. Shiv walked through two mechanics that, together, make Dawn structurally different from any other tranching protocol.

The first one deals with time. In most tranching designs, a small drop in the underlying asset's price would instantly hit the Junior tranche. Even if the drop means nothing. Even if the asset recovers ten minutes later. 

Dawn handles this with what the team calls an Observation Period, set up on the markets that need it. By default, those markets sit in their perpetual state: fully liquid, open to deposits and withdrawals. When a small drawdown appears, the market switches into a fixed-term window where Junior capital is shielded from losses that may not be real.

The second mechanic deals with price. The yield split between Senior and Junior isn't fixed. It adjusts continuously based on how the two sides are balanced. When there's plenty of Junior capital, less of the yield goes there. When Junior coverage starts to thin, the protocol pushes more yield to that side to attract fresh capital and rebuild the buffer.

In Shiv's words, the risk premium "adjusts itself on a second-by-second basis to make sure the market lands at that equilibrium point."

**A new layer in DeFi's capital stack**
=======================================

Toward the end of the conversation, Shiv said something that reframes how to think about a Senior tranche.

When a Senior tranche gets used as collateral on a lending market, something new appears: the Senior trancher becomes the middle layer between depositors above and Junior tranchers below. Protected on one side, levered on the other. Shiv called it the new mezzanine layer of DeFi.

That layer didn't exist before tranching. Senior tranches on Royco are the first asset with structural drawdown protection that can also be used as collateral elsewhere. In Shiv's words: "immaculate collateral."

And it's only the beginning. The next version of the protocol, Royco Dusk, takes this further by giving these Senior tranches liquidity from day one.
